Webinar - Data Protection and Information Security
Failure to comply with its provisions could lead to criminal liability under the Data Protection Act 1998 (‘DPA’) and professional censure under various sections of the SRA Code of Conduct. An affected client might also be able to claim for any losses suffered as a result of their professional advisers lack of care or breach of contract.
This webinar deals with the special obligations that law firms are subject to as data handlers. It examines the general law on data protection and the special obligations to safeguard client information and documents. The various legal and professional obligations that apply in relation to data mean that law firms – and all personnel within them – have to ensure that they take care to:
- keep client data confidential, and make use of it for stated purposes only – most obviously to process the client’s instructions and thus to provide a legal service
- safeguard all such data against loss or destruction.
- safeguard and make responsible use of the data held within the practice
